After spending far too long putting much of my life on hold while completing my doctorate program, I decided that once I graduated—and before starting my postdoctoral research position—I would finally visit the places I had spent years dreaming about seeing but never had the time to explore.

Immediately after passing my dissertation defense, I packed a backpack and a duffel bag, made a list of destinations I wanted to visit, and set off on a five-month trip with no fixed itinerary. I wandered from place to place, figuring things out day by day as I went and embracing the freedom I had postponed for so many years as a broke graduate student.

My friends fully supported this decision and jokingly gave me the nickname “Turtle” because I had given up my apartment and was essentially carrying my home on my back. That nickname became the inspiration for this blog: The Worldly Turtle

About This Blog

While traveling, I spent a lot of time researching transportation, logistics, routes, and all the small details that make independent travel possible. But many times, I struggled to find the information I actually needed in one place. Often, the answers were scattered across forums, outdated blog posts, or buried in random comments online.

A lot of the information I found felt generic or overly focused on inspiration without providing enough practical detail to explain how the process actually worked or how to realistically make the trip happen. I often wished there had been a single, clear, step-by-step guide that laid everything out from start to finish.

And sometimes, I couldn’t find enough information at all — but I went anyway and figured things out on the fly.

That experience is what inspired this blog.

Worldly Turtle is focused on practical, detailed travel guides designed to help independent travelers plan trips more easily and confidently. I try to create the kind of resource I wish I had before many of my own trips: clear, complete, step-by-step information in one place.

Because of that focus, I don’t really write about destinations that already have hundreds of polished travel guides online. Instead, I write about places, routes, and experiences I’ve personally had where I think information is limited, fragmented, or difficult to piece together.

Most of my travels are done independently rather than through organized multi-day tours. While I occasionally join local day tours, the guides here are primarily intended for travelers who prefer planning and navigating trips on their own.
